Every time a year is about to end, it’s always customary for people to talk about their personal goals, plans and resolutions for the next year. Well, I’m a person who doesn’t really believe in making New Year’s resolutions. I have learned to practice writing down my priorities on a weekly and daily basis many years ago and until now. Thanks to Stephen Covey’s bestsellers such as The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and First Things First which are my all-time favourite books on personal management.
Yes, I have learned to set goals for myself on a short term and long term basis. The long term basis would be about five years from now. The short term goals are what I plan to do daily and which I make a draft after writing down my weekly priorities.
According to Covey, looking at your goals in the perspective of the week will make them easier to manage. After making a list of weekly priorities, the breaking down of tasks into your daily schedule will then be doable and not overwhelming.
This is why I don’t have New Year’s resolutions. I believe I don’t need to wait for the next year for things to change. If I want something to happen, I just set a schedule for that, depending on its importance and urgency, it could be due the next day or next month… it doesn’t have to wait until the start of the year. And this is so true when it comes to health and fitness goals.
And since today is the first day of March, it’s the best time to start setting personal goals on a monthly basis as well. A new month gives us another chance to do better than the previous one.
Here’s to another fruitful and productive month ahead of us! 🙂
