Are you at risk for Osteoporosis?

I recently had a bone check courtesy of Anlene BoneHealth Check program which offers this free health service usually at department stores and malls. We were at the Robinsons supermarket to buy some snacks when I saw their booth.

Anlene BoneHealth Check is usually a scheduled activity, and runs only for few days in one location. Thus, we had to take advantage of their free bone check even if we waited for 15 minutes while they were still preparing their apparatus. The results? Mom is at high risk while dad and I at medium risk. Uh-oh. It’s definitely not a thing to be happy about. This means we need to double-time on our body’s calcium needs.

What is Osteoporosis?

Regarding calcium intake, we know it is an important mineral and we even have Cal-Mag-Zinc (Calcium-Magnesium-Zinc) with Vitamin D capsules at home which we try to take regularly. We also drink milk regularly, although not Anlene. Getting calcium from milk is easy for most people. For instance, one can simply mix it in coffee or tea, great for break time while enjoying home karaoke or watching TV. I also put milk in my oatmeal and most of my baking sessions always require milk on the side.

According to Anlene’s brochure, 1 glass of Anlene Gold Plus has the calcium of two glasses of regular milk. They also have Anlene Concentrate in tetra pack which has the calcium of four glasses of regular milk.

So does that mean we need to buy Anlene now? As Kris Aquino says in her Nido TV ad, “check the label!” Yup, I always check the label ma’am. So, I’ll do a bit of label inspection, read the nutrition content, do some computations based on serving size and corresponding calcium content, then compare it with getting calcium (with vitamin D) in capsule form plus regular milk. The aim is to meet at least 1200mg daily based on the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) and up to 2000mg as the tolerable upper intake level for calcium.

Osteoporosis: Bone breakdown begins at age 35

If you happen to see an Anlene BoneHealth Check booth while doing your groceries, why not have yourself checked? It’s not only for women but for men as well. Don’t worry, it’s for free and you will not be required to buy Anlene. 😉

We used to buy Anlene Gold 51+ and Nesvita ProBone (although we haven’t seen this in the grocery lately) for mom and dad. After that, we decided to have our calcium in capsule form plus get it from regular powdered milk. Let’s see how my computations will influence our upcoming milk and calcium purchases.

I hope we will come up with the best capsule + milk combination so we’ll have a favorable result on our next bone health check up!
