When life used to be so relaxed, with not a lot of deadlines to beat, I would spend some of my free time browsing and watching my fave artists on YouTube. Just search for a song or artist and there goes my time, being entertained by Switchfoot or Audrey Assad. There was even a time when I indulged myself in viewing YouTube videos on 80s and 90s music, reminiscing on my student days while watching Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, and other New Wave bands. While most videos portray the artists engaged in mushy love affairs, action/drama clips, or psychedelic visual effects, I prefer watching performance videos though, especially the band playing in a live show. An acoustic live performance is one of my faves as well.
It’s interesting to see how some guitar effects are done when watching these videos. Some aspiring guitarists also watch performance videos to see what guitar brand, pedal effects and gear are being used by their faves, i.e. noting the brand of guitar whether it’s a Gretsch or Fender. Maybe they can also determine the pedalboard supply brand whether it’s a godlyke power all or from some other manufacturer. One can also learn from watching how the lead guitarist take on a solo part, this is especially helpful for those trying to emulate or develop their own creative version of a song. Performance videos let us see how each band member does his stuff on the guitar, drums or keyboards, together with the others and how their instruments are incorporated in the song.
Nowadays, I just content myself with having my favorite songs playing in the background while working. I do hope to have a date with my YouTube faves soon.
